Nonna Maria's Place, NSW

NONNA MARIA'S PLACE

The nights have turned so cold lately, so it was warming to take refuge on a cool evening at Nonna Maria's Place at 56 Phillip Street in Parramatta that one time (...in the rare full moon) that I decide to venture forth to try someplace new out of my usual city locations.

Old school, traditional and home-made authentic Italian cuisine is what comes to mind once you find yourself seated inside Nonna's, a welcoming quaint little place with red and white checkered cloth tables, old Italian wine bottle candle sticks whilst serving up home style meals that just makes it feel even more like something Nonna would make for you.

Each table is offered a bread basket and home-made lemonade freshly squeezed for you to enjoy. A great citrus kick to start with and made the old fashioned way as well. It's all girl power this evening, with the friendly lady staff aiding us in recommendation for our dinner and pasta choices.

To start with we each had a slice of Bruschetta with freshly chopped tomato,  garlic, basil, olive oil, and vinegar served on slices of toasty warm bread. Then we each had chosen our pasta dishes for the main course - a rather filling and creamy Pesto Penne for myself with home-made pesto comprising of basil, pine nuts, parmesan and garlic in a light cream sauce garnished with a sprinkle of cheese.

MsFlatWhite tries the home-made sweet potato gnocchi freshly tossed in their carbonara sauce that had Bacon bits, egg and herbs in a light fresh cream sauce and a good dusting of cheese for her dish to complete it off. The gnocchi were soft and tender being not too overly soggy or firm that it would stick to each other at all. The different taste comes from using the sweet potato instead of a usual potato one which proved to be an interesting take on a popular Italian plate up.

We tried our best to not fill up too much on carbs, but heck, it was inevitable and by the time the suggestion of dessert came back into our minds we couldn't fit their homemade Tiramisu or Italian Gelato that evening. But there's always room for a next time!
